India’s Bollywood dream cast – Kisme Kitna hai dum!

Shahrukh Khan once famously said, “Cinema in India is like brushing your teeth in the morning. You can’t escape it.”

Indians cannot live without their regular dose of Bollywood fodder – be it movies, songs or the stars. And with Bollywood churning out over 1000 movies annually, there is just plenty of it all.

As avid movie fans, we lap up everything that’s laid in front of us. But what if we were given an option to direct a movie? What and who would we pick as our favorites? To find out the reigning kings and queens, Piplsay did a quick poll among movie buffs across the country on their dream cast. Following is the script we wrote inspired by the 45,0000 enthusiastic responses we received.

When it comes to lead characters, Aamir Khan and Deepika Padukone are the clear favorites though Khiladi man Akshay Kumar lends in a tough fight to our very own Mr Perfection. From PK, Dangal, Airlift to Padman, both these seasoned actors have been experimenting with different genres and themes that seem to resonate strongly with the Indian audiences.

It’s definitely great news for critically acclaimed actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Irfan Khan and Rajkumar Rao. Though they do not make it to the top 5 list, the fact that they were all ranked above mainstream actors like Saif Ali Khan, Siddharth Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt speaks volumes about their growing popularity.

Amongst the actresses, Alia Bhatt seems to have made quite an impression with her bold and varied choices as she comfortably upstages her contemporaries, both old and new. Jacqueline Fernandes, on the other hand, makes a dashing entry beating popular actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Anushka Sharma who surprisingly fail to make a cut.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems to be gathering quite a fan following as he becomes the top choice to be cast in a negative role. It’s a huge validation for the actor who struggled for years to create a niche for himself since he first appeared in Sarfarosh way back in 99. Others who were also the favorites include Akshay Khanna and Mahesh Manjrekar.

Bollywood has a plethora of supporting actors and actresses who add the much-needed tadka to a film, be it in a comedy or intense role. From sassy mom Kirron Kher to the fearless Richa Chaddha, from yesteryear heartthrob Rishi Kapoor to funnyman Rajpal Yadav, each of these actors have endeared themselves to the audiences with their talent and versatility.

Cutting the long story short

The fact that both Sci-fi and Fantasy outrun mythological and biographical genres says a lot about the audience preferences. Hollywood movies with their scripts and cutting-edge technology have definitely upped the demand for our own desi versions. This should come as a good news for the industry which has shied away from exploring this genre mainly because of the high costs and risks involved.

While songs continue to be non-negotiable for a majority of our respondents, opinions are clearly divided when it comes to the time factor. Even today, most Hindi movies tend to be around 150 minutes long if not more. Fans no longer seem to like that as more than half of the people surveyed by Piplsay seem to go for shorter crisper formats. A few fast and furious kinds even want their movies to be just an hour long. But then again, anything is possible in the creative world.

The Piplsay survey is like a report card on Bollywood – who scores and who does not, what is liked and what is not. After all, every film release is a test for all our stars where the audience gets to decide the marks.
