As the world feels the shock waves of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the American public have also been keenly watching the events unfold thousands of miles across the Atlantic Sea.

Through the power of social media, each and every incident at the war front has been reaching the eyes of the ordinary Americans. Needless to say, this has drawn wide ranging opinions on the matter.

The US government, on their part, have responded to the situation by imposing sanctions on Russia but people across the globe are wondering how the US involvement in the region is going to change as the situation unfolds.

So, the question arises, how does the ordinary American feel about the Ukraine/Russia situation? Piplsay polled 1006 people across the nation to find out.

How familiar are Americans about the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia?
To what extent do you feel familiar or unfamiliar when thinking about the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia?

    • Familiarity levels were high with 60% of the respondents saying they had a certain level of familairty with the issue current political issues between Ukraine and Russia
    • The level of familiarity was higher among the democrat states, with 62% saying they were familiar while it was 57% in the republican states
    • The older age cohorts were the most familiar with 69% of boomers and 63% of silent generation saying they were familiar with the situation
    • Males were more familiar as compared to females with 65% saying they were familiar as compared to 55% among females
Is there anxiety among the US public due to the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia.
I feel anxious when thinking about the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia.

    • There seems to be a great deal of anxiety among the US populace with 58% of respondents feeling anxious about the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia?
    • The silent generation, having been born around the WW2 era, were the most anxious about the situation with 72% saying they felt anxious
    • Anxiety was more prevelant among females (60%) as compared to males (56%)
What does the public think about the US government’s handling of the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia?
To what extent do you feel satisfied or unsatisfied when thinking about the US government’s handling of the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia?

    • A much higher percentage of people were unsatisfied (39%) with the US government’s handling of the situation as compared to those who were satisfied (23%)
    • A substantial number of people (40%) had a neutral outlook towards the way the situation is being handled by the government
    • 55% people in the republican states said they were unsatisfied while the percentage was slightly lower at 52% in the democrat states
    • The oldest age cohort, i.e. the silent generation were by far the most unsatisfied with close to half among them (47%) conveying their dissatisfaction
Is the ordinary American able to find relevant information on the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia?
I feel that I know where to look to find information about the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia that I do not know myself.

    • Vast majority of the respondents said that they know where to look for information about the current political issues between Ukraine and Russia that they do not know themselves (70%)
    • Gen Zers and Silent Generation (58% and 59% respectively) were similarly placed in terms of being the least aware about where to look for information on the Ukraine/Russia issue
    • A higher percentage of males (74%) knew where to find information on the matter as compared to females (64%)
    • Two thirds of the respondents said that they found the available information to be relevant

Survey Methodology: This Piplsay survey was conducted nationwide in the US on March 3rd, 2022. We received 1006 online responses from individuals aged 18 years and older.
